How to be a Momma Cat by LeAnn R. Ralph

Over the years, I have raised nine orphaned kittens. Four of
them were two weeks old when their mother was killed; three
others were only hours old when their mother died; two more
kittens fell out of the nest in our barn when they were only a
day old.
Raising motherless kittens is not a difficult process, but it
does require patience, time and plenty of TLC.
Here are some tips to help you raise your orphaned kittens:

Feeding the Hummingbirds
© LeAnn R. Ralph 2004
Early in May here in west central Wisconsin, I can count on
seeing a Ruby Throated Hummingbird hovering in front of my
kitchen window, flitting back and forth, as if to say, "there
was a hummingbird feeder RIGHT HERE last year. Where is it?"
And then I know it is time to put out hummingbird nectar. I feed
a 3-to-1 mixture of water and sugar (3 cups of water and 1 cup
of sugar brought to a boil and cooled to room temperature).

In reality, they suffer a problem very similar to culture shock, or in other words, they have not learned how to appreciate poetry or classical music. I should be clear that most people fall into this category. Even people who have studied the arts often times do not put forth the energy required to appreciate some classical music or poetry. People are reluctant to embark on an 'emotionally driven'

One of the primary negative impacts on children is the lack of
a consistent, nurturing father or father-figure. One of the
primary predictors of future violent behavior in boys is how
much neglect they perceive from their father. It's not enough
for 'dad' to go to work, come home, read the paper, watch ESPN
and then go to bed. That's being a roommate not a dad. Children
need to perceive active investment from fathers. We've defined a
good dad as the man who works consistently, brings home ...

As someone once said: "There's an easy way to do something, and
an unlimited number of difficult ways".
Take simple division, for example:
Suppose you need to divide 43 by 9.
The answer is 4 (the first figure of 43) and the remainder is 7
(4 + 3).
Similarly 35 divided by 9 is 3 remainder 8.
In the Vedic system we use the natural properties of numbers.
The number 9 has the property that it is 1 below 10. So every 10
contains one 9 and one remainder.
Therefore, in 40, there will be 4 nines and 4 ...

The expectations for fathers are increasing both at work and at
home. Here are ten ways for fathers to be more effective in the
most important job they'll ever have:
1.See your kids as capable
The achilles heel of many fathers is to see their kids as 'not
good enough.' Your kids will feel this, and they'll live up to
these expectations. The more you approve of them, the greater
they'll be!
2.Make time for your kids
There will always be more work, but you won't always have the
chance to be with ...

Has your hunt for father's day gifts ever collapsed into
feelings of resignation that dad will just have to make do with
one of the tried and true items from previous years? Does
finding the right gift for dad seem to take too much time and
effort?
Selecting just the right gift is an important way to say you
care, and it's not so difficult as it might appear.
Some people give up before they really get started considering
what to buy, because historically their efforts have been

If you think about what life must have been like 150 years ago,
when long distance communication meant putting pen to paper,
it's astonishing to think about how far we've come. Today, many
people will tell you they feel positively naked without a cell
phone dangling from the hip, and a palm pilot or Blackberry in
the pocket. Handbags are now specially designed with these and
similar items in mind. These are 'can't do withouts', and we

Nothing tastes better than fresh picked strawberries. For many
people, making homemade jams and jellies conjures up memories of
grandmother in the kitchen preparing bushels of fruit, stirring
and straining, and sterilizing jars. Actually, nothing could be
simpler. The key to making jam is small batches. Do not double
the recipe. The jam will not set up. This strawberry jam keeps
in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. But, we've never been
able to keep it around that long! It's also great as an ...

How to Plan Your Wedding and Honeymoon. 1. Weddings typically
can cost you anywhere around $15,000 or more. The big question
is: who foots the bill? The 21st century has heralded a shift in
the way these costs are handled. We have moved away from the
days when the family of the bride would pay all costs associated
with the wedding ceremony . Today it may come down to who can
afford it or, who can qualify for the personal loan from the
lending institution. Weddings may, in most cases, be a one ...

feet in front of me. It was early summer. A couple of friends of
mine and myself had just finished a week end camping and fishing
trip at one of our favorite lakes in the area, where we lived.

One of the most important things you can teach your child is
respect.
Keep in mind that respect is not the same as obedience. Children
might obey because they are afraid. If they respect you, they
will obey because they know you want what's best for them.
The best way to teach respect is to show respect. When a child
experiences respect, they know what it feels like and begin to
understand how important it is.
Keep in mind the saying 'Do unto others as you would have them
do unto you.' ...

Too Late?
Why is it that we tend to value relationships more once they've
ended? Is it simply human nature to take for granted the smile
of someone close, the friendship of a relative, the concern of a
neighbour? In the moment, we think that these people will be
around forever. Most of us never stop to imagine all those who
have a profound impact on our lives.
It's so easy to justify this casual attitude by saying we are
too busy, too tired, too involved with work, too concerned about
money, ...

many people seem to give much thought to, but I've been

other species don't have their good points as pets.
I've concluded that the main reason that dogs make better pets
is a simple one, although it's not one that most people ever

Just like a dog, a cat, or a child, rabbits love to play. They
need mental, physical, and social stimulation just like any
other pet does. A rabbit cooped up in a cage all the time with
nothing to do is a bored rabbit. Some breeds in particular are
apt to get bored. These include Tans, Checkered Giants, and
Britannia Petites, among others.
Toys keep your rabbit from being bored, and they also keep its
mind sharp. Toys that make your rabbit think are the best. Some
parrot toys are exellent ...

This was about 3 year ago but at that point in time, I probably
didn't notice the people who were sniggering uncontrollably
behind me when I bent to pick up the pacifier that Joshua spat
out onto the shopping mall floor. On top of putting on a fierce
display of hygienic practices, I refused to let him have the
same one back until it is completely sterilized. They could have
been rolling around on the floor with laughter so bad that it
made them rush to the ladies to place all those loose ...

How do you show someone you love them? Do you buy them expensive
gifts? Spend quality time together? Make personal sacrifices
just to see them smile? Dedicate a song to them? Write a love
letter or note of encouragement? Become their cheerleader? Those
are wonderful things to do but my question goes deeper then
those types of activities, even beyond your romantic partner.
Think about your parents, your children, your best friend, your
sister, or your brother... anyone you love. How do you ...

Everyone with a medical condition or allergy should have a
medical id alert bracelet. There are many places that you can
find a wide variety of medical alert jewelry styles, especially
on the internet. Most are custom-engraved, stainless steel
medical ID bracelets or necklaces. Each one should be able to
hold between four to six lines of medical information (for a
variety of conditions, diseases, allergies) and engraved in red
so the information is easy to read by emergency personnel. Over

Rabbits do well both indoors and outdoors, but they cannot
handle certain weather extremes.
Hot Weather
Rabbits do not handle hot weather well at all. To them, 80
degrees is hot. In order to prevent your rabbit from suffering
in the heat, there are several things you can do.
1. Make sure it has fresh, cool water throughout the day. 2. Put
water in plastic soda bottles or milk jugs and freeze them.
Place onein the cage and the rabbit will lean against it to stay
cool. 3. Make sure the rabbit's ...

If you want to avoid these typical examples of embarrassing scenes in the future, then you may want to start thinking about more unique gift ideas the next time another child's birthday comes up.

Age is not a prerequisite to grief. Not unlike their parents,
child must be allowed to experience the stages of grief. Denial
of opportunity to 'release' feelings, participate in family
loss, and share in recovery can be very damaging to the health
and well being of the child.
You do not have to be a psychologist or therapist to understand
and use basic tools to address the needs of a grieving child. It
does require recognition that 'kids are people too,' and
acceptance that their process of ...

Prom: it's loaded with expectations. For some, it's merely a

adulthood, while savoring one's position at the top of the

pure Cinderella magic. Combine all this with a youth-oriented
culture, and you have an event that demands a serious fashion
plan. So what fashion forces are driving Prom 2004? The answers
are: curves, glamour and loads of color. "Prom 2004" is actually

There are thousands of studies indicating that there's a link

There are also studies that say there's little relationship
between the two, and that there may even be some visual/spatial
benefits that kids receive from video games.

IN THIS SEASON OF GIFT-BUYING, DON'T IGNORE THE MOST IMPORTANT
GIFTS OF ALL
In this season of holiday gift buying, advertisers bombard us
with messages, some of them contradictory. One ad tells us that
the best way for men to show love is to spend three months'
salary on a piece of diamond jewelry. On the other hand,
MasterCard commercials remind us that there are some things
("Priceless" moments) that money can't buy.

Whoever writes all those fancy cookbooks has never been a
parent. To begin with, the pages are never spill-proof, almost
guaranteeing that somewhere in the middle of mixing ingredients,
a spill will cover the remaining two ingredients listed. This
means that parents must learn to improvise.
Some would suggest that the very thrill of cooking is
experimentation. So what's the big difference between oregano
and cayenne pepper, anyway?
Then there are all those "quick" recipes to "serve your ...

Be a Good Role Model.
'Do as I say, not as I do' is a common joke among parents, but
during the separation period, your children need a strong
leader. You know you must lead by example. You can't tell your
kids to do one thing and then do another, as they would be quick
to point out if you do not follow your own rules. It is
important to you that the television doesn't become an
electronic babysitter, taking the place of books or
conversations. Instead of watching your T.V. in the evening, ...

WHO'S GOING HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS? IS IT YOU . . . OR YOUR INNER
BRAT?
By: Pauline Wallin, Ph.D. www.drwallin.com
When you go home for the holidays this year, leave your inner
brat behind. The inner brat -- that part of your personality
that's still a two-year-old -- is responsible for much of the
conflict that we see at family gatherings, especially at
Thanksgiving and Christmas. It's your inner brat that makes a
big deal out of simple (but annoying) questions that your mother
asks over and ...

The holidays are upon us. It is the best time to teach your
family about caring for others. In the midst of all the holiday
madness, there are so many people who need and deserve your
help, and it can be so easy to do.
One easy idea is to contribute to Christmas Child. This program
is run by an evangelical Christian group, Samaritan's Purse. All
you have to do is fill a shoe box with small gifts for either a
boy or a girl. Good things to include are small toys, school

Whether it's only an hour or two or most of the day, traveling

How you handle it can depend on the ages of your children. No
matter their ages, you need to take into account your children's
interests.
Infants are pretty easy, relatively speaking. Personally, I

For the Christian family is a tradition of giving thanks,

may be well intended, sincere, and heart felt ... perhaps we

to learn to pray, because prayer is essential for a daily work

we shall receive it.' The key is to believe we will receive
that which we ask for, if we keep our eyes on Him. So, our
attitude targets the goal. The goal is met in His timing and in
His way. This matures our faith.

'Wouldn't you just know it,' muttered my husband, Randy.
We had already been driving for a couple of hours in a pickup
truck that we had borrowed from a friend, and now it was
completely dark.
'What's wrong?' I asked sleepily. I had dozed off only a few
minutes ago.
'It's starting to rain,' Randy replied, as he reached over to
turn on the windshield wipers.
Rain? In a few seconds, I came fully awake. If it was raining,
that meant Mom and Dad's furniture was getting wet.
So far, it had been my ...

Most of us own and drive a car. While we know that the highway

concerned enough with the powerful dangers it can present.
Logging on to the Information Super Highway puts us on a broad
road where the dangers are extreme, potentially harmful, and

Question:
Is there a "typical" relationship between the narcissist and his
family?
Answer:
We are all members of a few families in our lifetime: the one
that we are born to and the one(s) that we create. We all
transfer hurts, attitudes, fears, hopes and desires ' a whole
emotional baggage ' from the former to the latter. The
narcissist is no exception.
The narcissist has a dichotomous view of humanity: humans are
either Sources of Narcissistic Supply (and, then, idealised and
over-valued) or ...

At first glance, milkweed plants and poinsettias don't seem to
have much in common. If you live in an area where milkweed grows
wild, however, you can use the dried milkweed pods to make
poinsettia ornaments for your Christmas tree. Here's how:
1. Collect some dried milkweed pods. In the fall, the milkweed
plants have already gone to seed but the dried pods will still
be attached to the plant. You will need six "halves" of a
milkweed pod for each poinsettia flower that you are going to

Too many service professionals believe and rely on the common
adage "50% of success is just showing up."
In fact, they seem to act that, "If half of my success is just
showing up, I don't really have to do anything and will get by
just fine."
You may be thinking that's totally insane! But what else could
they be thinking? For, here are the 10 reasons why people
distrust, hate, and avoid in-home service professionals like the
bubonic plague:
REASON #1: THEY DON'T RETURN PHONE CALLS--well, ...

I think that school is starting outrageously early! Why can't it
start AFTER Labor Day, or sometime in the first week of
September?
What do you think?
Here are some of my reasons:
1. August is much too hot! Some schools don't even have air
conditioning. How can a kid study and learn when they're hot and
sweaty?
2. Summertime is the best time for families to take family
vacations and starting school in August would prevent them from
taking a Labor Day vacation. Tourism is one of our ...

Breasts in North America are a taboo: going topless on beaches
is not generally accepted, breastfeeding in public is often
frowned on or seen as 'indecent exposure', women going topfree
is considered shameful and immodest behavior.
On the other hand, entertainment industry and the media
constantly show women wearing very scant clothing that barely
covers the nipples and just draws more attention to the breasts.
Fashion swimwear covers less and less of the female body each
year. Media and ...

Kitchens are the centers of our lives. We cook, converse, and
even eat in our kitchens. Perhaps that is why getting motivated
to clean a kitchen is 99.9% of the battle...and elbow grease is
the other 0.1%.
The reason for this is mostly because of all the rooms in a
house, the kitchen alone has the position of having the most
traffic, use, and just plain dirt!
To start yourself off, it can be extremely helpful to have a
checklist handy of all the possible things you can do so that

others section off an area in a room with perhaps just a desk.
Either way, this article will deal with organizing this area of

Children have an enormous capacity for learning new concepts. However, when their minds are not stimulated, they subconsciously erect walls that prevent the absorption of these concepts. The same is true when teaching kids martial arts. While the physical activity offers a tactile experience which aids the learning process, the routine can quickly become monotonous. When it does, a child can easily lose interest; they may go through the motions during their classes, but fail to truly absorb and ...

1. Declaration of Independence - As walking and talking, the
potty training period is a milestone of independence. Potty
training can allow you and your child to Declare Your
Independence, you from the controlling, autocratic, punitive
potty training methods used by past generations, and your child
from the methods using yelling, threatening, ridiculing and even
spanking. Both of you declare that the more fun you have in the
potty training process, the healthier and easier it will be.

I've often thought that in 6 million years, archaeologists will
marvel at the devotion the 21st century Earthlings had to their
household gods. Excavation will show these deities in virtually
every home, obviously objects of devotion, the focal point in a
room. The gods were believed without question. Families emulated
them, discussed them, and scheduled their lives around them. The
parent was secondary in influence to the various versions of
these boxes with a glass screen that captivated an ...

"It's a good thing" is a mouthful for a new generation of
working mothers
Poor Martha. For five long months she will be forced to leave
all her 'good things' behind as she serves her sentence in
federal prison for obstruction of justice. While Martha
Stewart's recent run-in with the law is nothing to gloat about,
it can be seen as a kind of vindication for mothers everywhere.
It demonstrates in a rather spectacular fashion that while
maintaining perfection at work and at home is a ...

Talking to Kids About War
by the Rev. John P. Jackman
A few days ago, my 8 year old daughter asked my wife "What state
is Iraq?" My wife explained that Iraq is not a state, but
another country. This led to a number of other questions: "Why
are they fighting?" "Why is Saddam Hussein bad?" And finally, in
a very round-about way, she came to the real question: "Are we
safe?"
Unless you live in a sealed vacuum, your children know there's a
war on. The war is everywhere. Just as with the news ...

child's presence in their life. The love that is expressed in
that simple act is one of the most profound ways that we
experience love in this world. In order to nurture the special
relationship of parent and child, and fulfill our roles as
parents, there are number of things that we are signing up to
do. Here is a list of eight essential ways to fulfill our
parental responsibilities.

Olivia and I returned from going to the rodeo, and we'd been
talking about going swimming. 'That would be fun,' I said.
'We're hot and sticky. Let's ask your Dad if you can.'
When we got to the house, Olivia ran ahead of me. While I was
talking to her Dad, she came running out in her swimsuit. 'We're
going swimming!' she said, bouncing up and down, 'We're going
swimming!'
You can imagine what transpired. She'd been told she couldn't go
swimming, and had done an end-run around Nana. She had to ...

After this afternoon's fiasco, I've developed a new parenting
philosophy: never deny your child anything.
"Yes, darling, of course you can take drugs (after you kill me
and do away with my body)."
"Sure, dear - do start smoking! As soon as you've eaten these
three packs of menthol cigarettes..."
"Of course you can have a chocolate bar, baby. When you're
finished that broccoli, we'll walk over to the store and buy
one."
"You sure can go outside honey! Once we're done picking up your
toys, we'll ...

Why Budgets Don't Work and How to Fix It By Terry Rigg
This article is for those families that have sat down at a desk
or the kitchen table time after time trying to develop a family
budget that they can live with.
Why don't they work?
There are several answers to that question. Most budgets are
doomed from day one because they are too complicated, don't have
the commitment of all involved or the numbers simply don't add
up. The biggest culprit is that most people don't allow for
unexpected ...

Raising a pre-teen or teenage daughter (or son) is not easy and
can cause any parent a lot of stress. There's so much to worry
about ' dating, drugs, alcohol, sex, school grades, just to name
a few. But one crucial element often gets overlooked until it
manifests itself in extreme ways (like through an eating
disorder). I'm talking about self-image. It's extremely
important that parents ensure that their children have a
positive self-image, especially in relation to their body.
The key to ...

It is extremely difficult to setup a budget, especially when you
are behind on some of your bills. Even if you can make your
regular bills and expenses fit neatly into your budget, what can
you do if you don't have the money to catch up?
I have listed several methods and circumstances below that may
help manage setting up your budget and begin to pay those
overdue bills. Since there are as many different budgets as
there are people that try to set them up, this list may not be
all inclusive. It ...
